They’ve replaced Mussina’s wins. They’ve replaced Giambi and Abreu’s production. And in the process they’ve pissed off everyone in baseball. But now the Yankees need someone with proven championship pedigree. So they need to finish their off-season work and sign Manny. Never mind all the whining and complaining. How many championships have Teixeira, Burnett, and Sabbathia won?
No, now you love him again, don’t you. Twenty-four hours later and CC is your best friend - and for the next seven years. Take back everything you said yesterday. Go ahead. We won’t hold it against you. And after CC chokes for the first time in pinstripes, we’ll even let you say ‘See, I was against that signing from the beginning!’ You know you will.
So spoiled Yankee fans (who almost always get what they want for Xmas) are beginning to whine about CC. Usually they are gracious enough to wait until the player signs and under performs before they turn on the guy. But these are somewhat desperate times. And fans are feeling ‘used and abused’ by CC, as if every player has to go for the money, every time. The Yanks knew his interest was lukewarm at best and yet they bid early and impressively, giving CC exactly what he needed for negotiations with the CA teams. So whose fault is that? The moved reeked of desperation and rightly so; the Yankees are a desperate team. Fine. Just don’t turn around now and act offended because top-flight talent doesn’t want to come running to the third-best team in the AL East.
