They are celebrating in Yankeeland with the re-signing of all the big free agents. But what are we really cheering about? This is the same team that suffered the historic collapse of ‘04, has been bounced from the playoffs ever since, and most recently finished in second place. If the only real difference is going to be the manager, then aren’t the Yankees essentially blaming it all on Torre?

Of course, you would probably take your chances with this group. But if winning the World Series is the only thing that matters, then maybe the ‘07 offseason was a wasted chance at tinkering with a formula that clearly hasn’t been working.

Anyone who thinks A-Rod has somehow redeemed himself today is very mistaken. This is just more of A-Rod being A-Rod.

If Rodriguez is rejoining the Yankees, it is because of Scott Boras - not in spite of him. More than likely, it will turn out that in the end the Yanks represented A-Rod’s biggest potential payday. And that is why he came crawling back.

These face-to-face negotiations with the Yankees represent everything that makes A-Rod an enigma. First he wanted to stay forever. Then he opted out. Now he wants to come back more than ever. And think of the drama he has stirred up while trying to make up his mind.

He and Hank will say it is pinstripes forever. But it’s all a show - a drama constructed for primetime. The Bombers and A-Rod were made for each other, an off-field extravaganza. But on the field, this has never really been a good fit. We may not ever know for certain what being a ‘real Yankee’ is. But if nothing else, A-Rod continues to demonstrate to us what a ‘real Yankee’ is not.

It’s the Yanks or retirement, according to diva / hurler Andy Pettitte. But why is retirement even an option? He says his arm feels great. He had no significant issues last season. And he won many games for the Yankees.

So once again, it is Pettitte trying to win a little extra love, trying to squeeze out every ‘Oh Andy, the Yanks can’t live without you!’ that he can. We’re tired of it. Go retire Andy. Or better yet, retire and then come back in June to save the day. You’ll see. Suzyn will go nuts. And they’re all going to love you. We just know it….
