Keep Farnsworth, Clueless Joe

1 His value continues to go down. He appears to be trying to get himself traded. But now more than ever, the Yanks will not get equal value for their malcontented set-up man.

2. How can Torre so easily dismiss Jose Canseco’s comments about A-Rod? Doesn’t Joe understand that this is the only guy who tells the truth about ‘roids in the game? The idea that the new book will somehow hurt A-Rod is funny logic coming from the man who once batted him eighth in the playoffs. For the good of the game, we need to hear what Canseco has to say.

A-Rod On Roids?

1. That’s what Jose Canseco may be saying in his new book. He tells WEEI in Boston: “I have other stuff on Alex Rodriguez that will be coming out.” Asked if that meant ‘roids, a coy Canseco replied, “Wait and see.”

2. The heat appears to be off Brian Cashman for now. But just to exemplify how bad of a year he is having, imagine where the team might be right now with Matsuzaka instead of Igawa.

3. The good news for Clemens and Pettitte? The playes named in Jason Grimsley’s list will not be revealed any time soon. The bad news? Players named in the list could be the subject of a much larger and ongoing investigation.

Yeah, But Are They Any Good?

The Yanks win their sixth in a row and by now they are ‘feeling good about themselves’, as Torre always likes to say. It seems the team has rediscovered its ability to beat up on the bottom dwellers of the AL (something that proved difficult even a month ago). But a win is a win and now they will at least be in contention for the Wild Card the rest of the way. But what is this team really made of? Are they peaking thanks to the soft schedule? Or can they sustain this run and avoid the losing streaks that plagued them throughout the first three months?

The Savior

An aging veteran past his prime continues to perform well into his forties, at a record-setting pace. He’s a workout freak and, yes, a freak of nature. Yet, in spite of this, he never evokes protest or scandal or even so much as an unkind word against him. No one ever questions how he continues to defy his age, even though his name has been linked with a prominent steroid scandal (involving a number of the game’s stars). In fact he is still revered in baseball circles- a modern legend, so to speak. And no, of course his name is not Barry Bonds. It is your Yankee savior, Roger Clemens.

The Myth Of The ‘Personal’ Catcher

The only question is how the Yankees ever lost one game to the Devil Rays over the weekend. If you would like to credit Mike Mussina for that, then how are you feeling about his latest complaints over the loss of his ‘personal’ catcher (Nieves)? Why is it that certain Yankee pitchers require a catcher who is not Jorge Posada, even though he clearly gives the team the best chance to win?

Big Leaguers Don’t Cry

Or do they? Edwar Ramirez breaks down during a post-game interview after his miserable performance yesterday: “I’ve never done that. That’s the first time. My arm is good. Everything’s good. I don’t know what happened.” It seems like only yesterday YES couldn’t stop raving about the guy. But that is what happens when you are always trying to manufacture the ‘next big thing’. Now you have to wonder if he even has the mettle to compete at this level. And you have to wonder when YES will finally see that this bullpen is just plain bad.

Should Jeter Say Something?

Michael Kay and others are imploring Jeter to say something in response to buddy Gary Shefffield’s cries of racism. But once again the captain has chosen to remain a silent leader. Does someone (a player - not a writer) need to step up and defend Joe? Or are Sheff’s comments so ridiculous that they don’t warrant a response?

Lofton: ‘Sheff Knows What He Is Talking About’

What does Kenny Lofton think about Gary Sheffield’s accusations? “All I can say is, Sheffield knows what he’s talking about. That’s all I’m going to say.” Is it really possible that these two guys are right? Could Torre have unwittingly treated his black players differently?

Sheff: ‘Torre Not A Racist, But…’

1. We sure miss Gary Sheffield. Among his remarks to Real Sports was the revelation that Jeter “…ain’t all the way black” (Wow, explosive stuff). Also Torre supposedly “called out” black players.

So does this mean that Jeter was “called out” half of the time?

2. The Yankees have supposedly issued an ultimatum to A-Rod. After signing Clemens, can we ever believe a word they say again?

3. Torre’s post-game comments continue to befuddle: “You really have to let go of the final score because a lot of times you can’t control it.” Right. See, we’re living in a random universe and no one has control over anything.

“I have no trouble sleeping tonight, other than the final score.” Other than the final score, what else is there? You just lost to the pathetic Devil Rays and you’ll have no trouble sleeping?

4. If Scott Harper was bad, then what can be said of the phantom falling man at Yankee Stadium? This guy crashed into tourist Paul Robinson and broke his neck. Any hopes of identifying this crash dummy were lost when his buddies came and hauled him off.

The A-Rod Effect

What effect is the A-Rod contract situation having on the other Yankees? Mariano “doesn’t know what they are thinking” and Posada says “If they don’t want me here, I don’t want to come back”. Here’s a prediction: if the Yankees fall completely off the map during the second half of the season, at least one of these two is walking. They’ve done far more than Rodriguez in terms of building the latest Yankee dynasty. And maybe we’re wrong but don’t you sense at least a hint of that Pettitte prima donna style in their statements?
