Yanks Crowned World Champions!!! On YES…

They’re going to party like it’s 1996 and 2000 tomorrow on YES. That’s right. Beginning at 12 PM, YES will be broadcasting the decisive games from both the 1996 and 2000 World Series. It’s true. The order of the universe will once again be restored. Jeff Weaver will revert to his former life as a baseball obscurity and the New York Yankees will rise to their rightful spot as world champions (Twice in one afternoon!).

Eat At Mo’s

• In today’s Post, Mariano Rivera talks up his New Rochelle steakhouse, Mo’s New York Grill. Donald Trump, Joe Torre, and Brian Cashman are all patrons.
Read the article.

• Apparently Gary Sheffield has taken to stalking George Steinbrenner, showing up at his residence unannounced: “I went by his house in the morning and he wasn’t there. I wanted to go back in the afternoon but maybe I will call him.”

Lee Mazzilli is out as Yankee bench coach / Don Zimmer guy and has been replaced by Don Mattingly. This potentially sets up a nice managerial showdown with Joe Girardi in ‘08. In the meantime, is it back to YES for the manager of the year? Does he want to manage the Yanks that badly?

Jeter: No need to clear air with A-Rod, AP, October 26, 2006

As much as we’d like to, we’re not going to speculate about the details of his first European vacation (with Michael Jordan!). Instead, we’ll focus on what Jeter had to say upon his return, regarding the A-Rod matter:

“Everyone tries to assume what’s going on in the clubhouse, what people think they know and what they think people are doing. They have no idea. But no, I don’t see any tension.”

Sheffield Out At First

Notes: Sheffield upset with Yanks’ contract move, USA Today, October 26, 2006

You knew it was going to end badly. It always ends badly for Gary Sheffield. Here’s the Yankee firstbaseman grumbling in USA Today:

“This will not work, this will not work at all. I don’t want to play first base a year for them. I will not do that.”

And about the rumor that the Yanks will pick up his option, only to trade him:

“If they do that, if I just go to a team for one year, there’s going to be a problem. A big problem. I will not do this.”

The Yankees biggest problem at the moment? Sheffield’s diminishing trade value.

A-Rod Trade Watch: There Is No Trade Watch

A-Rod, Yanks Stand United, NY Daily News, October 25, 2006

From the daily that brought you such headlines as ‘Torre Likely To Be Fired’ and ‘Yankees To Keep Torre’, comes ‘A-Rod, Yanks Stand United’. It boasts an interview with Scott Boras, who after speaking with Brian Cashman, seems quite certain that there will be no trade:

“There will be no movement of Alex Rodriguez this offseason.”

That’s right, Yankee fans. Get ready for another season of mental meltdowns, jeering, and over-analyzing.

Read ‘The Death Of Derek Jeter’

The Death Of Derek Jeter By Michael Martone, Esquire, November 2006

We’ve hyped it. We’ve read it. Now it’s your turn. Or if metaphysical baseball fiction really isn’t your thing, here are a few excerpts:

Derek goes to the Dalí Museum ("I never know how long I should look at a picture before I move on to the next.").

Derek speaks of his cologne ("Last night a contradictory odor seeped from Scott Proctor after he walked Thome with one out in the seventh…").

Derek on A-Rod’s summer: ("He catches a few rays in the park and that night it’s as if the magic all dried up in him. Three errors.")

Yankee Xmas Ornament Controversy

Foul Fly Bawl, NY Post, October 24, 2006

This mailer ad came out just a couple of days after Lidle’s crash. So it isn’t as if the company is intentionally trying to capitalize on his death, like The Post wants you to believe (or like these people are).

“Your team spirit will soar” with the plane on your tree, it says.

World Series Goes On Without Yanks, Somehow

Game 2 Starters Bombed In Bronx, NY Post, October 22, 2006

Tonight’s Game 2 starters come courtesy of that ever fertile Yankee scrapheap: Jeff Weaver and Kenny Rogers (5th and 6th worst Yankee ERAs ever). Last year, we had Jose Contreras. Who will it be next year — Sidney Ponson? Any contender serious about winning the title would be foolish not to give him a look.

The Fall Guys

Cerrone’s Job Is Yanked, NY Daily News, October 20, 2006

The big boys may have escaped unscathed. But the Yanks have quietly lowered the boom on several other staff members:

Rick Cerrone: VP Media Relations
Jeff Mangold: Strength and conditioning coach
Chuck Cottier: Scout
Wade Taylor: Scout

Admittedly, someone had to be held accountable for the debacle in Detroit. But these guys?
